I don't really see why it would be better to go off it before surgery. Weaning off a PPI isn't going to be any worse post surgery than pre surgery and as long as your symptoms are reduced while on the drugs it doesn't make sense to go off it earlier (that is, you are going to start to get the same symptoms you had before you went on the ppi). One surgeon i talked to (he was covering for my surgeon one day when i was in the hospital) said that he preferred to leave people on ppis for a few weeks post surgery before starting the weaning process simply to make sure that postop symptoms are related to the surgery rather than dropping the ppi and having recurrent symptoms. just my 2 cents.
